I dare you to be curious

Leadership doesn’t always happen in front of everyone, in speeches or big events.  Leadership also happens during short, intimate hallway moments when you connect with one of your developers.

It could be as simple as turning “How’s it going?” from a time-filling statement into a real question that you’re intently curious about.  A question that causes you to stop everything and wait for the answer. To ask a follow-up question and pay attention to what they say (and how they say it.)

Sixty seconds of curiously about how they are doing.  Sixty seconds of listening, nodding, and encouraging them to continue without breaking in.

It’s a small price to pay, but it’s how loyalty is built.  One small moment at a time, on a random Wednesday morning, when you take the time to show you care.

I dare you to try it and see what happens.

About Marcus Blankenship

Where other technical coaches focus on process or tools, I focus on the human aspects of your Programmer to Manager transition. I help you hire the right people, create the right culture, and setup the right process which achieves your goals. Managing your team isn't something you learned in college. In fact, my clients often tell me "I never prepared for this role, I always focused on doing the work". If you're ready to improve your leadership, process and team, find out how I can help you.
